Upgrading your front doorUpdate Your Front Door - Upgrade Your Curb Appeal

There’s no denying the fact that the front door of your home has a huge impact on the overall curb appeal of your property.  It presents visitors with a warm and welcoming embrace, makes a chic and sophisticated statement or gives a whimsical glimpse into the personalities of the family residing in the space beyond.  If your front door is in need of a makeover or replacement, taking the time and effort to upgrade your entrance is an investment that will pay off for many years to come.

If your door is in need of a full replacement and a new one is within your budget, you are in luck!  In today’s world, you have unlimited options available to you.  You can select doors made of wood, glass, fibreglass or steel.  Do you prefer a door graced with windows or sidelights for added light or a beautiful solid door for privacy?  Don’t forget to check into the insulation value, security and durability of your new door before making your final decision. Choosing a new energy-efficient door adds additional value to your home.

If replacing your door isn’t an option, there are still many economical and creative ways to update your look.  One of the most effective and least expensive ways to mimic the look of a new door is to give it a fresh coat of paint.  Exterior colour is hot right now and it’s one of the easiest ways to boost curb appeal!  A dash of black can flatter almost any home’s exterior style or colour scheme while a bright red or a deep hue of green makes a bold statement.  Make certain that you prime your door first and choose a high quality outdoor paint that will withstand the sun, foot traffic and the elements.

Another effective way to improve your front door’s appearance is to replace the hardware.  Corroded or ‘pitted’ hardware gives the impression that the home is unkempt.  Replace any worn or outdated hardware with new handles, kick plates and locks for a clean, crisp and just-from-the-factory look.  In an older home, the addition of a beautiful or unique doorknocker can add an elegant and classic look.

Consider adding new house numbers to your door or entrance, placing pots of beautiful flowers by your entryway or adding a colourful wreath and change the decorations along with the seasons for added impact.  Cleaning the door on a regular basis and removing any debris from your entrance will also do wonders to improve the appearance of your home.
