Basement displays.jpgWhat's better than finishing a home renovation on budget? Giving your space a whole new look and feel for free! Believe it or not, it is possible. Here, we round up 12 simple and easy-to-accomplish updates you can make to your basement without pinching pennies.

Colour Coded
By organizing bookshelves by colour, you'll add a splash of brightness to the area, and the fixture will act as a piece of art.

All Lit Up
Add a little extra light to your basement (without spending a penny) by draping holiday lights along the walls and from the ceiling.

Photo Swap
Simple and chic: switch out the photos in your picture frames each quarter. You can use them to display everything from kid's art to ticket stubs.

Dual Use
Want to upgrade your basement's furniture but don't have the cash? Replace it with your outdoor lounge chairs and tables.

Around the World
If you love to travel and have received or purchased postcards around the world, showcase them on a focal wall by displaying them as art.

Storage Space
Use mason jars as vases for flowers or loose objects like paintbrushes or pens. This will keep things organized and your basement tidy.

Perfectly Polished
Give life to old furniture by polishing it with a homemade concoction of two tablespoons of olive oil, 1/4 cup water and 1/4 teaspoon of lemon juice.

Hung Up
Can't afford to buy frames? Dangle artwork from hangers. All you need is a little tape and a nail.

Cool Candles
Peel the labels off of old wine bottles so the latter can be used as candlestick holders. Melt wax on the bottles to give them a vintage feel.

Bowled Over
Have a few colourful bowls on hand? Use them to display objects on a basement table.

Bonus: this effect will add some colour to a basic space!

Cactus Cups
Reuse old tea cups by planting cacti in them. To add some colour to the DIY, place stones on top of the soil.

Collectible Display
Arrange all of your collectibles into one place so you have a shrine for your most prized possessions.
