A long-running tradition on the circuit, the Canadian Open is the third oldest tournament in professional golf after the British Open and the U.S. Open. The Canadian Open dates back to 1904 and has played annually since then, excepting some years during World Wars l and ll. The Glen Abbey Golf Course has hosted the most Canadian Opens and for the 26th time in the tournament’s history, the Open returns to the beautiful Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville!
Beginning July 22nd and continuing through to the final round on July 28th, the Canadian Open promises to be as exciting as always. Mike Weir and Stephen Ames, two of Canada’s best-known PGA contestants, will likely be on hand to battle it out with other big PGA celebrities hoping to take home the prestigious Open trophy. This year’s cast of PGA players is scheduled to include some of the tours most elite names, such as Hunter Mahan, Luke Donald and Ernie Els, and is once again being sponsored by RBC.
Oakville residents and visitors from around the globe will have the opportunity again this year to experience the competition first-hand while enjoying the spectacular scenery at the world famous Glen Abbey Golf Club. Nestled in the valley of Sixteen Mile Creek and situated at the foot of the Niagara escarpment, Glen Abbey offers visitors gorgeous views and lush rolling terrain. To the golfer, water hazards and the thick brush surrounding the tee decks present many challenges and provide the perfect backdrop for the one hundred-year-plus running Canadian Open.
The event kicks off on Monday, July 22nd with practise rounds on the Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday features the RBC Wealth Management Championship Pro-Am commencing at 7:00am. This event promises to draw a few celebrities from the big screen as well as stars from the NHL, NBA and Major League Baseball. Officially, the PGA contestants don’t begin keeping score cards until the opening round of play on July 25th. For the full schedule of events, visit www.rbccanadianopen.com.
Tickets are available for purchase or if you prefer or you can volunteer your services at the event by visiting www.rbccanadianopen.com. The Ronald McDonald House has been chosen as this year’s charity for the RBC Canadian Open. Since coming on board as the title sponsor of the Canadian Open in 2008 and in collaboration with Golf Canada, the group has raised more than 5 million dollars for charitable organizations across Canada. Throughout its illustrious history, Canada’s National Open Championship has generated more than 45 million dollars in charitable proceeds and looks forward to adding to that total in 2013.
The tournament has helped to place Oakville, home to the world-renowned Glen Abbey Golf Course and a frequent host of the Canadian Open, on the global map as not only a world-class destination to visit, but also an enviable place to live!
