Love Your Decor Choices

Love Your DecorUnless you are well schooled in the art of decorating and design, we are all guilty of following trends and making a faux pas that we later regret. Figuring out your decorating style is an evolving process. There are a few simple rules that if followed, will help to avoid decorating mistakes.

CUT THE CLUTTER

Accessories should not dominate a room.  They should blend in with the room or help highlight a key feature. You may love a certain pattern or colour, but too much of a good thing could create an eyesore. To avoid overpowering a room with dust-collecting knick-knacks, employ the one item in, one out rule. If it's kitschy, leave it at the store and save yourself the money and the time deciding what other item to remove.

COMFORT IS KEY

Every room should feel comfortable. This is your home, not a museum. Be sure to include items that reflect your personality and interests, including artwork.  Make sure the furniture is suitable for the use of the room. If you have a desk, you need a suitable desk chair.  If you spend most of your time watching TV or movies in that room, make sure your seating is soft and comfortable, not hard.

AVOID PERIMETER DECORATING

A common mistake is to push all furniture against the wall, ending up with a large empty space in the middle of the room.  Pick one wall as the focal point and build out from it.  Just remember to keep traffic flow in mind when placing the furniture.

SEE THE LIGHT

Lighting is often ignored or poorly thought out. Think of all the activities you will be doing in the space. Lighting is required for various tasks and to set the mood. Also, put as many lights on dimmers as you can.

KEEP PROPORTIONS IN MIND

Proportion and scale can be tricky to master. Measure a room's dimensions and each piece of furniture that you will putting in the room. Make a diagram to scale with the furniture placement. If it's crowded on paper, it will be crowded in the real space. If there is not enough furniture in the room, it will look off as well.

Decorating your home can be a daunting task. Following these rules will help make it fun!
