Ice Breakers - Meet The NeighboursTaking the time to get to know your neighbours can enhance how you feel about your community and your living situation.  Whether you’ve been there for years or are just moving into a new neighbourhood, here are a few great ways to help break the ice and build new relationships. Who knows? Your new best friend could be right next door!

Host a Street Party

Chances are your neighbours are eager to get to know you as well, so take the initiative and plan a street party. Be sure to check with your municipality to find out how to get the required permits:departments may vary.  Also consider hosting it in your own backyard, if space allows. Not only does this give you the opportunity to get to know who lives in the hood, it’s also a great way for the kids in the community to get to know each other.

If you live in a condo, a floor party is a great alternative. Book your condo’s entertainment room or
host a potluck in your unit.

Use Local Vendors

Support your neighbourhood by using local resources when entertaining. Visit the corner grocer, café, butcher or deli shops to stock up on supplies. Sign up for a membership at a smaller gym owned by a member of your community. You’ll be surprised at the number of people from your neighbourhood you’ll run into.

Take a Walk

Turn that evening stroll into an opportunity to stop and chat with neighbours. Do they have kids the same age who might like to play together? Do you both have dogs? What other common interests do you share?

Lend a Helping Hand

Sometimes the easiest way to get to know someone is by lending a helping hand. Being a good neighbour is one of the best ways to break the ice. It’s the little things that can go a long way: helping with grocery bags, shoveling the end of your neighbour’s driveway when you do yours, offer to feed the cat while they are away on vacation.
