4 Most Popular Home Features for 2014

Blog by Joette Fielding | October 29th, 2014

Most Popular Home Features 2014Granite countertops, double sinks and central islands are a few kitchen features that home builders are most likely to include in homes built in 2014, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Home Builders. Other hot home features include linen closets, high ceilings on the first floor, front porches and patios, the survey revealed.

These in-demand features reflect home builders’ desire to provide what buyers want most in a new home. Here are the four most popular home features the NAHB survey revealed:

Walk-In Closets in Master Bedroom

The days of cramped closets are long gone. Buyers expect spacious walk-in closets that allow them to quickly find what they need without having to dig for it. The popularity of walk-in closets is driven by the home buyers need for organization and storage. The trend in high-end homes tends to be for customized closets that almost have the feel of a personal boutique with dedicated spaces for shoes, clothes and accessories.

Low-E Windows

Windows with low-emissive (low-E) glass feature a special heat-reflective coating that reduces energy consumption. They also offer the added benefit of decreasing fabric fading on furniture placed near windows. House hunters who are buying new seek to escape the high heating and cooling costs of older, inefficient homes in pursuit of an energy-efficient home that will save money and the environment.

Laundry Rooms

Fully-loaded, highly-functional laundry rooms are also popular in new homes. This is a departure from the old days when washers and dryers were often housed in a dark basement, almost as an afterthought. Today’s integrated laundry rooms often come equipped with lighted surfaces at suitable heights for folding clothing, a utility sink for treating soiled garments, and may even double as a mud room.

Great Rooms

The demand for a multi-purpose great room in a home has arisen from the trend toward open floor plans. Buyers feel that great rooms allow more natural light to brighten the home and contribute to a feeling of spaciousness on a first floor.
